Build a homelab

Tips for a practice lab at home – networking, virtualisation and hands-on learning

A homelab complements in-company training. You can experiment safely, make mistakes and document – just as required in exams.

Hardware

Minimum setup for a useful practice lab

  • Mini PC or old laptop is enough for 2–3 VMs
  • At least 16 GB RAM recommended for virtualisation
  • SSD significantly speeds up VM startup
Virtualisation

Hyper-V, VMware or VirtualBox for practice environments

  • Hyper-V on Windows Pro or cross-platform VirtualBox
  • Separate internal VM network from home network
  • Create snapshots before risky changes
Networking

Practise VLANs, DHCP and routing on a small scale

  • Managed switch or OpenWrt router for VLAN exercises
  • Own DHCP scope in isolated network segment
  • Do not mix lab network with production internet
Practise effectively

Link homelab with learning fields and tasks

  • Document every exercise – good training report practice
  • Break complex topics into small steps
  • Recreate tasks from the task area in the lab
